Music in Pakistan at the time of independence was mainly focused on folk, qawwali and filmi genres. The first popular musical groups in Pakistan sprung up during the late eighties, which included Strings, Awaz, Jupiters and Vital Signs. The nineties proved to be the boom years of the industry as the introduction of pop music and rock music became more popular with the youth. The beginning of the 21st century saw a budding Underground rock movement with alternative songs and new yet more hip and metal styles of music. This category contains the list of some of the past, present and forthcoming musical groups that are based in Pakistan. This list includes musical groups that based their music on pop, rock, jazz, traditional and classical genres and Pakistani folk music.
