The Palatinate or Rhenish Palatinate was a subdivision of the Kingdom of Bavaria from 1816-1918 and of the Free State Bavaria from 1918-1947. By the occupation-circumstances after World War II Bavaria lost that area and it was divided between the new federal states Rhineland-Palatinate (lager portion) and Saarland (smaller portion). The Roman Catholic Diocese of Speyer was founded 1817 as the ecclesiastical counterpart of the Bavarian Rhenish Palatinate and has its old borders, identical with the borders of this former political territory, which is divided now.
