Institutions of higher education in the United States affiliated with, but not necessarily owned or directly managed by, the bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Need to research which institutions are directly connected to a diocese; which are sponsored by a religious order or congregation (and therefore have a percentage of members on the board of Trustees, corporation, etc.); and which are lay run (with a bishop on the board). To be designated "Catholic," however, each institution has to meets certain criteria set by the diocese in which it is located. For example, Georgetown University, besides being sponsored by the Jesuits also seeks to be on good terms with the archdiocese of Washington. The U.S. bishops can withdrawn the use of the name "Catholic" if a school goes against certain Catholic teachings. No religious community (i.e., Jesuits, Congregation of Holy Cross, Dominicans, Benedictines, etc.) or lay group (as at Ave Maria University, FL) wants that to happen.
