Note: in rugby union terms, the United Kingdom, Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland do not exist. Rugby union in the British Isles is governed, organised and internationally represented on the basis of England; Wales; Scotland; and Ireland comprising Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Rugby union players are designated English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh – never British when competing for their national teams, and only sometimes (inaccurately) when playing for the British and Irish Lions.
Note: formerly, several countries were represented by the combined teams, e.g. the CIS, East Africa, and the Gulf States.
