Shropshire (including Telford and Wrekin) has 22 settlements or communities which are officially towns. Many of them are very small (such as Clun and Much Wenlock) and there are many villages in the county, such as Bayston Hill and Albrighton, that are larger than many of the smaller towns.

Each town is a civil parish with a town council (see list of civil parishes in Shropshire) with the exception of the new town of Telford, which is formed by a number of parishes of which four (Dawley, Madeley, Oakengates and Wellington) are also towns in their own right. The sixth town in the borough of Telford and Wrekin is Newport, which is a separate settlement to Telford.

The five main towns of Shropshire as a whole are (in order of size): Telford, Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Bridgnorth and Ludlow.
