It seems entirely unnecessary to me to have both a category for figurate numbers, and a ton of articles on them.

It is as silly as having a category: Category:Univariate polynomials with consitutent articles Quadratic polynomial, Cubic polynomial, ..., Quintic polynomial, Septic polynomial, octic polynomial, nonic polynomial, decic polynomial, ..., etc., etc.

I'm not sure I feel proactive enough to nominate everything for deletion, but I do think everything in this category should be in one article.

It would be a big chore to merge all of these into one big article; it might make that one big article mind-numbing to read through. These numbers have distinct histories, and properties, and the current structure allows for expansion. Comparing to polynomials is not fair: quadratic, cubic and quartic really do have thier own distinct articles, and are not merged into one. There are no articles on septic, octic, etc because there is nothing to say about those that isn't generic. A better comparison might be Category:Polyhedra; one would not want to merge all of those articles. I see no harm leaving things as they are. But I have no particularly strong opinion. linas 00:58, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
