Born in 1865, Maligayil Chandappan Koman of Thayyil in Cannanore township of erstwhile North Malabar obtained LMS degree from Madras Medical College in 1887. Thereafter he joined the Health Service and became Senior Assistant Profesdor of Chemistry at Madras Medical College wherefrom he passed out, and also Civil Surgeon at the General Hospital. When the Government appointed the Sanatoria Committee in 1911, he was inducted as the only Indian member. He received the Indian title of Rai Saheb in 1912 and was made Rao Bahadur and was knighted in 1921. He was the first Indian President of the Madras Medical Council during 1919 - 1921. Sir Koman was appointed Chairman of single member Commission in1921 and he submitted his 3 Reports on the Investigation into Indigenous Drugs in 1921 (British National Archives IOR/V/27/850/41). M.C. Koman was initiated into the British Freemasons at the John Miller Lodge in 1898. He became Master Freemason at the District Grand Lodge in 1902, 1913 and 1914. He was first Indian Worshipful Brother installed as Supreme ruler in Daman and Pythias Conclave in 1910. He was invested with Collar and Jewel of District Junior Grand Warden in 1918, honoured with Past Assistant Director of Ceremonies in 1923 and a Chair was established in MC Koman's name at the Madras Masonic Institution. And most significantly Koman held a toast in a Cake and Wine Banquet to Queen - Empress Victoria's son the Duke of Connaught in 1921. He was Deputy Grand Master of District Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons in 1924. He owned Grants Garden residence at Vepery and the Red Hills Estate near the Poondi Reservoir in Madras. And on 25 - 2 - 1925 Sir Koman's noble soul left its physical Tabernacle and flitted away into the land of peace. Jayaprakash Mallay (talk) 13:46, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
