Certes Networks, formerly CipherOptics, Inc. is a Pittsburgh based information security company, notable as one of the leaders in policy and key management for network encryption technology.[2]

The company's products are used in wide-area networks,[3] metro-area networks, data centers, and wireless networks. Certes Networks' customers include Fortune-100 and multi-national corporations, government agencies,[4] financial institutions, and utilities.

History[edit]

Certes Networks was founded by Michael Doss and Dennis Toothman in 2000. Originally funded from a Lucent Technologies grant, the company’s initial focus was on encrypting high-speed fiber optic links. Through the 2000s the company expanded its offering to other Layer 2 (Ethernet) and Layer 3 (IP) technologies. In 2006 the company released the CipherEngine solution, the industry’s first purpose built policy and key manager for network-wide encryption. In 2009 Certes Networks added the ability to support Layer 4 (TCP/UDP), allowing service providers to secure data while preserving netflow and traffic shaping capabilities.
