The league is competed by 12 teams that play each other once at home and once away, and at the end of the 22 matches, the top four battle it out in a playoff, the winner of which is named as the champion. The bottom two clubs are relegated into the lower league, replaced by two from the second division. Along with other French football competitions, four points are awarded for a win, two for a draw, and one for a defeat.
