Chapin is a town in Lexington County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 628 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Chapin is located at 34°9′57″N 81°20′50″W / 34.16583°N 81.34722°W (34.165783, -81.347260)[3].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²), of which, 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²) of it is land and 0.55% is water.
While Chapin is a part of Lexington County, the creation of Lake Murray, South Carolina by the Dreher Shoals Dam cut Chapin off from the rest of the county, creating something of an exclave.

The town is named after Martin Chapin, who built the Chapin Hotel in the 1880s along the new rail line that ran from Columbia, South Carolina to Newberry, South Carolina.

Within a five-mile radius around Chapin, (78.49 square miles) there was a population of 7,755 in 1990 and 11,351 in 2001. Within a 10-mile ring (313.96 square miles), the population was 28,735 in 1990 and 40,027 in 2001. Within a 15-mile ring (706.4 square miles), the population was 88,858 in 1990 and 125,765 in 2001.
Per Capita Income in 2001 was $26,599 within a five-mile radius from the center of Chapin; $25,886 within a 10-mile radius; and $24,605 within a 15-mile radius. Median household income was $55,661 within five miles; $53,594 within 10 miles; and $53,290 within 15 miles.
According to the 2000 Census, the incorporated limits of the Town of Chapin had a population of 628. The census counted 249 occupied housing units within the town. Per capita income was $24,124. Median household income within the town limits was $48,750.
