Chapman Partnership is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), private sector partner of the Miami-Dade County, Florida Homeless Trust. In October 2011, CPH changed its name to Chapman Partnership in honor of its founding chairman, the late Alvah Chapman, Jr., commissioned to site, build and operate two Homeless Assistance Centers in downtown Miami and Homestead.
Alvah Chapman, Jr., former CEO of Knight Ridder, was asked by the late Governor Lawton Chiles to chair the Governor’s Commission on Homeless. The Commission was charged with developing and beginning implementation of the strategic plan to serve the homeless in Miami-Dade County, which became the Miami-Dade County Community Homeless Plan. The Governor’s Commission on Homeless worked cooperatively with the Miami-Dade Legislative Delegation and the Metro County Commission to ensure the passage and implementation of a one percent food and beverage tax in larger restaurants to fund homeless programs. The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust collects and distributes the tax dollars and oversees the implementation of the Plan.
Chapman Partnership was incorporated in 1993 as Community Partnership for Homeless.
Chapman Partnership has two Homeless Assistance Centers – 1550 North Miami Avenue, Miami (North Center) and 28205 SW 124 Court, Homestead (South Center). With fully equipped medical and dental clinics, family dorms, conference rooms, cafeterias, classrooms, day care centers, a basketball court and even a dog kennel.
Programs & Services
Chapman Partnership provides a wide array of programs that go beyond just emergency shelter to 800 men, women and children daily. They include comprehensive case management, health and dental care, day care, job development and training, job placement, permanent housing assistance and other help from a variety of social service agencies – all under one roof. 800,000 meals are served annually and over 340 households have been placed with Federal Stimulus dollars since October 2009.
All residents are referred to the facilities by the Miami-Dade County Homeless Outreach. Upon referral, the intake process begins with registration and a full evaluation of their situation, including a health screening, dental screening, assignment of a bed and case manager, and the initial formation of a goal plan to advance their ability to seek more permanent housing and, if necessary, employment.
Children are registered for school and/or enrolled in on-site programs. Assistance with forms for Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security & Disability are provided as needed.
