Snezhinsk (Russian: Сне́жинск) is a closed town in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. Population: 48,896 (2010 Census preliminary results);[2] 50,451 (2002 Census).[3]

It was founded in 1957, and was known as Chelyabinsk-70 until 1991.[citation needed] Town status was granted to it in 1993.[citation needed]
[edit] Administrative and municipal status
Administratively, along with two rural localities, it is incorporated as the Town of Snezhinsk—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1] Municipally, the Town of Snezhinsk is incorporated as Snezhinsky Urban Okrug.[1]

Snezhinsk is one of two centers of the Russian nuclear program (the other one is Sarov) and is built around a major scientific research institute—"All-Russian Scientific Research Center of Technical Physics—Federal Nuclear Center".
