The Cholan Express (16854/16853) (Officially Tiruchirappalli-Chennai Egmore Express) is an express train operated by the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. This train connects Chennai Egmore and Tiruchirappalli in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The train runs daily and have RSA with Mangalore Express. The Trains via Tanjore,Kumbakonam,Mayiladuthurai,Cuddalore and Villupuram.

Relevance[edit]

Train is named after the Chola Kingdom which ruled over the regions through which the train passes. The Cholas ruled over their kingdom with headquarters at Woraiyur.

It runs via Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Panruti, Cuddalore Chidambaram, Sirkazhi, Vaitheeswarankoil, Mayiladuthurai, Kumbakonam, and Thanjavur.

Additional information[edit]

The train used to have a milk van at the rear end and it was famous among rail fans of Tamil Nadu since it was the only train to do so in the state[citation needed].

Criticism[edit]

Even though this is a day train, the train has sleeper coaches. This has been strongly criticized from various quarters and have asked to install seating coaches rather than sleeper coaches. But Now due to the Protest of several railay group the SR added three Chair Car Coaches. But there are still claims that Chair Car classes must be increased.
