O'Neil was born in Boulder, Colorado, and attended Dennison Elementary. He attended D'Evelyn Junior/Senior High School as a seventh grader.[1] He attended Denver Academy. His family hired an acting coach for him after he did well in school oral interpretation classes.[2] O'Neil subsequently won five silver and one bronze medals at amateur acting competitions during the summer of 2005 and was taken on by Cutler Management, who sent him to study acting.[1] Shortly thereafter, in what was only his second acting audition, he was cast in The Last Mimzy.[1]
