Zhongshan (Zhōngshān) is the Mandarin pronunciation of 中山, the Chinese for "Middle Mountain" or "Central Mountain".
In modern China, it often refers to Sun Yat-sen, who adopted its Japanese form Nakayama while he was hiding in that country. His hometown in Xiangshan or Hongshan (香山) in Guangdong Province, China, was subsequently renamed Zhongshan in his honor and has grown into a prefecture-level city.
An alternative romanization found in older sources is Chung Shan.
