"Circus" is a song by American pop singer Britney Spears from her sixth studio album of the same name. It was released on December 2, 2008, by Jive Records as the second single from the album. The song, produced and co-written by Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco, talks about Spears abilities as an entertainer and compares them to performing in a circus. Musically, "Circus" is an uptempo dance song, with influences of R&B.

"Circus" has received positive reviews from music critics, many praising the song’s production. The song has achieved commercial success as well, topping the charts in Turkey, reaching the top five in the United States, Canada and New Zealand and the top ten in many other countries. The music video features Spears as the ringleader of a circus and was directed by Francis Lawrence. The song has been performed on Good Morning America as well as in The Circus Starring: Britney Spears, where she performs it as the opening song of the show wearing a ringleader outfit and carrying a whip.

Circus has sold over 2 million digital downloads in the U.S. and was a top 3 smash. Circus won the title of Best Video Of 2009 with over 30 million total votes. Spears also won last year with Womanizer, which received over 40 million votes.[3]

[edit] Background and release

After much speculation about which track would follow the success of "Womanizer", on October 31, 2008, Circus was announced as the second single from the album on Spears official website.[4] On the Circus DVD interview, when asked about the song, Spears said,

" When I heard [Circus], I was excited because it put the whole album together as far as what I wanted my show to be like. You can play with a circus in so many different ways: a circus is fire, lions, tigers, bears, tricks, magic, it’s everything. "

The song was officially serviced to U.S. radio on December 2, 2008.[1]

[edit] Music structure

"Circus" is an electropop song with influences of R&B.[2] It is composed in the key of F# minor with 115 beats per minute.[5] Spears's vocal range spans from G#2 to C#5.[6] The song begins with the sound of a drum and builds up until Spears starts singing. The beat interpolates a mid-tempo version of "Thunder and Blazes", a well known military march often associated with the circus. The first verse has usage of synthetizers and is presented with a stomp-clamp beat.[2] The chorus kicks off with an electronic sound and has been described as being "half-rapped".

Lyrically, the song talks about being an entertainer and putting on shows.[2] She explains her emotions while performing in lines such as: "I feel the adrenaline moving through my veins / Spotlight on me and I’m ready to break". During the bridge, she compares herself to a ringleader and a firecracker. In the chorus, she compares herself and performing as being on the center of a circus ring.[2]

[edit] Reception

The song has received generally positive reviews. Nick Levine of Digital Spy described it as "a rampaging monster of a song whose chorus kicks off with a Max Martin-style and Timbaland thump".[7] Pop Justice praised the production of the song, compared it to "Break the Ice" and added, "there's a lot of stopping and starting, including a built-in MTV-style dance breakdown segment."[2] Chris Williams of Billboard in its single review appreciated the song and praised it for its electronic sound.[8] In the album review, Ann Donahue criticized the song’s lyrics for rehashing the theme of fame and compared it to Spears previous efforts, "Lucky" and "Piece of Me".[9] Sputnikmusic said that while "Womanizer" sounded like a Blackout track, "Circus" "is more reflective of the album’s general mood".[10] Dan Cairns of The Sunday Times named it along with "If U Seek Amy" and "Mannequin" one of the standout tracks of the album.[11]

[edit] Chart performance

"Circus" premiered live on Spears' 27th birthday (December 2, 2008) during a performance on Good Morning America.[12]

On the issue of December 20, "Circus" opened at number-three on the Billboard Hot 100 due to digital sales of over 212,000 units.[13] It has become her second highest-charting single on the Hot 100 Airplay peaking at number-seven,[14] behind "Womanizer" and "(You Drive Me) Crazy", which peaked at number-six.[15][16] The song has so far sold over 2,000,000 digital downloads in the United States.[17] In Canada, the track also debuted big, at number-two, based solely on digital downloads, being blocked from ascending to the top spot by Lady GaGa's "Poker Face".[18] Six weeks later "Circus" rebounded 4-2, once again blocked by "Poker Face".[19] It spent ten weeks within the top ten.[20] The song made success on American Top 40, peaking at #1 for just a week on March 14, 2009. The following week, it fell to #2, beaten by Flo Rida's "Right Round".

Moreover in Europe, "Circus" has peaked at fourteen on the European digital chart,[21] in addition to peaking just outside the top 20 on the European Hot 100 Singles at twenty-two.[22] So far, the track has peaked within the top ten in Sweden at number six and Denmark at nine; the top twenty in Ireland at twelve, Norway at fifteen, Finland at seventeen and the United Kingdom at thirteen,[20] where "Circus" was physically released on February 16. Release date for the other countries is February 27. The song is one of the three longest-running singles on the Turkey Top 20 Chart having spent 10 consecutive weeks at number one, as well as being the first of two songs by Spears to become the longest-running single on that chart, and one of the longest running singles by a female artist.

In the Pacific, the single entered the Australian Singles Charts at number-fifteen and spent two weeks at its peak, number six.[20] The Australian Recording Industry Association certified it Gold for shipments of over 35,000 units and on February 16, 2009 the single was certified Platinum for sales over 70,000.[23] In New Zealand, "Circus" debuted at number thirty-six and outpeaked "Womanizer", reaching number four.[24] It was certified Gold after sixteen weeks, selling over 7,500 copies, before falling off the chart the next week.[25][26]

[edit] Music video

The music video was filmed from October 28, 2008 until November 2, 2008. Confirmed by her manager Larry Rudolph, Francis Lawrence, who previously directed Spears's video for "I'm a Slave 4 U" as well as the 2007 film I Am Legend, directed the music video.[27] Spears chose Lawrence, since he was the "only person who could capture it, make it really twisted, eccentric and different".[28] The shoot was confirmed by Spears herself on November 6, 2008 at the MTV Europe Music Awards, while on set shooting it. She was seen sporting a curled bob hair style.[29] An exclusive three-second clip was shown during a promo for her documentary Britney: For the Record.[30] A 30 second preview/teaser of the video was released by Spears' Jive Records-run YouTube channel on November 25, 2008, with a second being released on December 1, 2008.[31]

The video leaked on to the China video sharing website Tudou on December 3, 2008, although this was later confirmed that this was not the final edit of the video.[32] The finalized video was to be officially premiered on December 5, 2008, on Entertainment Tonight.[33] However, due to the leak and public interest, Entertainment Tonight and Spears' management decided to change the date of the world premiere to December 4, 2008.[34]

The video starts off with Spears at a vanity, putting Curious on as well as putting on earrings by BVLGARI. Then her shadow is seen, she is holding a hat in front of her face while birds fly out of a hat. Then Spears is shown in front of a red curtain, with the spotlight on her. She puts on a jacket and proceeds with her dance crew. As the chorus begins, they are all shown dancing. Then Spears is shown with a leaf-like bra on, dancing around chairs. Also, she is seen moving in slow motions with fireworks coming down behind her. Spears and her crew dance around a ring of fire. Throughout the video Spears is also seen next to lions and elephants.

The entertainment website, Digital Spy, described the music video as being "cheeky, seductive and more than a little bit ridiculous", and said that Spears "delivers some killer dance routines".[35] PETA has criticized the music video, which they claim uses cruelly-trained lions and elephants. PETA director said: "Britney may think her life is a circus, but for the animals who are whipped, chained, and beaten to perform under the real big top, the cruelty is very real. She may be headed for a comeback, but when it comes to animals, she still can't get her act together."[36] This is the second time PETA have commented on the singer, the organization criticized her for dancing on stage with a yellow python at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards.[37] The video won the award for "Best Moves" at the MTV Australia Awards 2009.[38]

The music video has received over 60 million hits since its release on YouTube alone. Total viral views total over 80 million.

On August 4, 2009 it was announced that the song's music video had been nominated for 5 awards at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards: "Best Art Direction", "Best Choreography", "Best Cinematography", "Best Direction" and "Best Editing", however, Spears won none for this song.[39]

Spears' Circus video has received many nominations around the world, including a nomination at the 2009 MTV EMA for Best Music Video 2009. Also Spears earned the title for Fuse's 2009 Best Video against Papa Roach's "Lifeline" with over 9 million votes so far and beating other contenders such as Lady Gaga and The Black Eyed Peas. Total votes for Circus are in excess of 30 million.

In the end, Circus defeated Lifeline and was also crowned FUSE's #1 Video Of 2009 giving her a second annual win in a row.

[edit] Live performance

Spears performing Circus.

"Circus" was performed for the first time on Spears' 27th birthday (December 2, 2008) at Good Morning America. She started the performance singing at the top of a cage, wearing a red jacket, black leather pants and a ringleader hat. At the end of the first verse, she comes down from a staircase and takes of the jacket to reveal a black top that exposes her bare midriff. She bows; turns back to open the cage and her dancers come out from it. The song was shortened for this performance. At the end, she poses with her hands over her head and the dancers take her into the cage with them. In The Circus: Starring Britney Spears, "Circus" is the first song of the show. A video introduction featuring Perez Hilton parodying Elizabeth I begins, and Spears shoots him with a crossbow as the screens go up. While Hilton lays on the floor he welcomes us to the circus, and Spears comes down from the ceiling in a suspended platform, wearing the Ringleader Jacket , fishnet stockings and high-heeled laced-up boots. She also carries a whip. She sings the first two lines of the song and the song stops as she extends her whip, which is followed by screams of the audience. The music starts again and she sings and dances until the end of the second chorus. During the bridge, special effects surround her as she dances and spins in the main stage. The performance ends with smoke surrounding the stage, allowing her to run to a cage in the center of the stage to perform "Piece of Me."
