The Netherlands passed a Registered Partnership law in 1998. Registered partnerships were established for same sex and opposite sex partners, providing the same rights and responsibilities as married partners, with one exception: registered (female or male) partner of a woman who gives birth is not deemed to be the second parent of the child. A law to extend marriage to same-sex partners was passed in 2001.
