- A region game is one in which both teams are in the same region; these games are counted in the region standings if the region is not split into divisions.
- An inter-division game is one in which both teams are in the same region, but the region is split into divisions and each team is in a different division within the same region. These games may not be counted in the region standings.
- A play-in game is a region, inter-division game in the last week of the regular season which is held to determine which teams qualify for the state playoffs. Usually this is treated as a preliminary round to the state playoffs: the winner advances to the first round of the playoffs while the loser is eliminated from contention.
