[edit] Regional coverage

Cleveland College of Art & Design is the only specialist art and design college in the North East of England and one of only four in the country in the further education sector.

[edit] History & Estates

The college has three campuses, two in Linthorpe, Middlesbrough and one in Church Square, Hartlepool.[1]

Middlesbrough School of Art, on Durham Street, and the nearby Government School of Arts in the Athenaeum on Church Street, West Hartlepool first opened in 1870 and 1874 respectively.

The college's current principal is Martin Raby.

[edit] Green Lane campus

Its main Middlesbrough-based Green Lane campus was first opened in 1960 by Robin Darwin, then-Principal of the Royal College of Art, and was later extended as Middlesbrough School,of Art. It is based in Linthorpe, just north of Acklam in the east of Middlesbrough and towards the A1032.

[edit] Burlam Road campus

The third site, at Burlam Road, which now houses provision for the BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art & Design, was the accommodation of choice for the College's BA (Hons) degrees in Fine Art and Photography until the end of the 2006-7 academic year.

It is situated to the east of the A1032 just to north of the Green Lane campus, near the A66/A19 junction and the Middlesbrough General Hospital.

[edit] Church Square campus

The college has operated continuously in its present Hartlepool spot since 1938, despite a 1966 fire. It off Church Street (A178) at the junction of the A689 (Stockton Street) and A178, and near the railway station.

[edit] Courses

As Cleveland College of Art & Design is an institution of both further and higher education, it has courses aimed at 16-year-old school-leavers all the way through to degrees, as well as part-time evening classes.

[edit] FE courses

The college offers a range of BTEC Edexcel National Diplomas across the whole art and design spectrum, including Design Crafts, Graphic Design, Textiles, Photography, Fine Art, Fashion & Clothing, 3D design and Multimedia.

Cleveland College of Art & Design also offers a BTEC Edexcel Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art & Design, a course traditionally undertaken by A-level students prior to enrolling on an art and design course at university.

[edit] HE courses

At higher education level, the college also offers BA (Hons) and FdA degrees, covering such subjects as textiles, photography, theatre design and fashion. All the college's Higher Education courses are validated by the University of Teesside.

[edit] Academic performance

Although not offering genuine A-level courses, its further education exam results are the best, by points total, in North East England. However, direct comparison with the more academic A levels may not be valid.
