Colombo District (Sinhala: කොළඹ දිස්ත්රික්කය, Tamil: கொழும்பு மாவட்டம்) is the smallest district in Sri Lanka with an area of 642 km². It is located in the Western Province, on the western coast of the island. Sri Lanka’s commercial capital, Colombo and the political capital, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte are located in this district. It has a population of 2,235,000 (2001 census) and has the highest population density of all Sri Lankan districts (3,500 inhabitants/km²).
