Concordia University Irvine is a private, liberal arts university located in Turtle Rock, a neighborhood of Irvine, California, and affiliated with the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. It offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in six colleges and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Founded in 1976 as Christ College, Irvine, it had an enrollment of 1749 students in the 2004-2005 academic year. It is a member of the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Concordia is most notable as of late for its advancement in the teaching of the Natural Sciences, including Math, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, and Chemical Physics[citation needed]. It has recently built a new Chemical Physics Laboratory, and has recently opened a building dedicated to the schools of Education, Business and Technology. It also includes online classes for Bachelor's degrees.
Concordia University launched its Master's of International Studies [1] program in 2006. This unique master of arts degree allows students to combine an academic study of Chinese culture with the practical experience of living and working in China. In order to equip students with the skills necessary for this unique experience, students first complete 13 units in Irvine, California, during the summer prior to their placement in China. As an integral part of the students’ MA program, they also teach/intern at school training centers or businesses. This experience is at the heart of the student being provided with a rich context for learning about local Chinese culture while actively living within it.
