The Copa CONMEBOL (English: CONMEBOL Cup) was an annual football tournament played between 1992 and 1999. It was the South American equivalent of the European UEFA Cup. It replaced the Supercopa Sudamericana which featured past Copa Libertadores champions. Teams that were not able to qualify for the Copa Libertadores played in this tournament. The tournament was played as a knockout cup. Six of the eight editions were played with sixteen teams whilst one was played with eighteen, featuring a preliminary round, and another with fourteen teams. The title was won by seven different teams and twice by Atlético Mineiro. All of the champions were from Argentina and Brazil. The tournament ended in 1999, following the expansion of Copa Libertadores to 32 teams. The Copa Mercosur and Copa Merconorte, which both started in 1998, replaced the Copa CONMEBOL, and the merger of those 3 cups transformed in the current Copa Sudamericana[1][2][3][4][5].
