Covington is a city located on the western edge of Fountain County, Indiana. The population was 2,645 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Fountain County.[3]

Covington is located in the west part of Fountain County along the Wabash River, where U.S. Route 136 crosses the river. Interstate 74 passes about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) to the south of the city.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,565 people, 1,092 households, and 714 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,196.1 people per square mile (846.5/km²). There were 1,175 housing units at an average density of 1,006.0 per square mile (387.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.75% White, 0.04% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.23% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.51% of the population.
There were 1,092 households out of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 31.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.79.
In the city the population was spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $40,432, and the median income for a family was $48,792. Males had a median income of $32,313 versus $24,079 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,776. About 3.6% of families and 7.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.1% of those under age 18 and 7.5% of those age 65 or over.

Interstate 74 passes by the south edge of Covington, traveling east toward Indianapolis, Indiana, and west toward Champaign, Illinois. U.S. Route 136 passes through the middle of town, traveling west toward Danville, Illinois, and east toward Veedersburg.
