Crank is a novel by Ellen Hopkins published in 2004. The book has been banned in many locations due to complaints of the book's drug use, language, and sexual themes.[1][2] Hopkins has stated that she has based the book loosely around the real life addictions of her daughter to crystal meth[3] and that the book is required reading in "many high schools, as well as many drug and drug court programs".[4]

[edit] Plot
From the bookjacket
"Kristina Georgia Snow is the perfect daughter: gifted high school junior, quiet, never any trouble. But on a trip to visit her absentee father, Kristina disappears and Bree takes her place. Bree is the exact opposite of Kristina -- she's fearless. Through a boy, Bree meets the monster: crank. And what begins as a wild, ecstatic ride turns into a struggle through hell for her mind, her soul -- her life."
[edit] Film Adaptation
Ellen Hopkins on her website stated that Crank has been optioned for a feature film.[citation needed]
[edit] Reception
Critical reviews for Crank have been positive, with Publishers Weekly stating that "Readers will appreciate the creative use of form here... and although the author is definitely on a mission, she creates a world nearly as consuming and disturbing as the titular drug."[5] Kirkus Reviews also reviewed Crank, saying the book was "Powerful and unsettling".[6]
