Nawa Kabika popularly known as DJ LBC (Born 7 July 1981) is a Zambian born Radio and International Club DJ and is the host of Lusaka’s QFM Power Breakfast Show,[1] every weekday with 1 million listeners nationwide.

Born into a family of four, Nawa Kabika grew up in Lusaka city where he attended primary and high school. His affinity for music became evident at the age of seven. In a house hold dominated by sisters, he found himself spending a lot of time listening to radio more than he participated in activities boys at his age should have been. By the time he was in 7th grade he had amassed a decent collection of cassettes which gained him quite a reputation among his peers in the neighborhood.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

In 2000, a year after completing high school, he acquired a certificate in video production after which he went for another certificate in public relations. It was during this time that he joined the radio 4 fan club where he learned the basics of broadcasting before his first gig at Radio Phoenix[2] as a weekend grave yard slot host.

Nine months later, he had created a massive buzz in the city but got fired from the station for playing music that was outside of the station policy. Two days later, he was offered the late night show on the then very new QFM which he hosted for two months after which he was moved to the morning show, a show that would change the sound of morning radio in Zambia forever.

In March 2004, he won an award for the best show. The prize included a media tour trip to London where he spent a month familiarizing himself with The BBC, Choice FM, Kiss 100, and Capital FM among others.

In 2006, he had a stint at Hot FM[3] as a weekend breakfast Show presenter after which he returned to London[4] but his time to pursue a post Graduate Diploma in Marketing (CIM) at The London School of Marketing.[5] After a 5 year hiatus, he returned home on QFM to claim his throne as the King of morning radio.

DJ LBC has also build a reputation as a DJ, hosting major events such as "The Sprite DJ Mixing competition" which featured international artists including Gidi Gigi Maji Maji and Skwata camp, an event he hosted for 3 consecutive years. In 2005, He also hosted the Fanta Mega Music Party which headlined South Africa's Mafikizolo, Pitch Black afro, and Mzekezeke

It was during his time as a student of marketing in London working as a producer for an East London based "Voice of Africa Radio".

Lake of Stars is an award winning festival that takes place in the warm heart of Africa on the palm fringed shores of the continent’s third largest lake and a year round project working in the UK to promote arts, travel and development.

Big Brother Africa is a television program produced by Endemol. The show initially involved 12 countries within Africa (Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia & Zimbabwe) with two countries (Ethiopia and Mozambique) being added in season 4. Each country produces a contestant living in an isolated house while trying to avoid being evicted by viewers and ultimately winning a large cash prize at the end of the show.

  • Host of the Sprite DJ Competition - Zambia

The sprite DJs mixing competition was an annual event that was sponsored by sprite aimed at discovering talent in Zambia. Three events where held, on the Copperbelt, Lusaka and Livingstone after which the winning DJs would compete in a National final for a cash prize and an opportunity to represent Zambia at the all Africa battle.

  • The MTN Summer Jam - Zambia

The MTN summer Jam was a series of two events held during Zambia's independence weekend with the first event held at Room 101 featuring DJ LBC, DJ 3ill and South Africa's Ian Credible. The following Day the summer jam invaded Kafue Marina Boat Club for an afternoon of music and boat cruises hosted by the same DJ Line up.

  • Zambia Independence Party for UK Zambians

In 2008, the headlined the Zambia Independence Party for UK Zambians where he shared the stage with UK Rapper Tinchy Strider. The event was held at the Stratford Rex, an international venue that has hosted names such as Lil Wayne and Beenie Man.
