DaniWeb IT Discussion Community is an online IT message board. The website initially gained attention amongst the vBulletin community for its unique method of building an entire site, including proprietary content management system, exclusively on top of the vBulletin forum framework (in the first quarter of 2012, DaniWeb converted from vBulletin to a framework developed in-house).
DaniWeb began gaining widespread attention throughout the search engine optimization industry in 2005, and the founder, Dani Horowitz, went on to speak on various panels at search engine conferences.
More recently, DaniWeb began publishing and featuring IT news which has subsequently received mainstream attention in the media. In January 2007, DaniWeb staff writer Davey Winder published a story that TomTom GPS devices were being released from the factory virus infected. Within days, TomTom released a press release acknowledging DaniWeb's story.
In November 2007, DaniWeb acquired ProgrammingForums.org, a free online community targeted at professional and hobbyist programmers.
While DaniWeb has built up a community of over one million registered members and promotes 10 million monthly pageviews, the website was hit hard by the Google Panda algorithm update in February 2011, and subsequently lost over half of its traffic. After a number of very high profile articles on all of the major search engine news outlets, a high profile interview with Dani Horowitz conducated by WebProNews, a Google Hangouts video by Google's Matt Cutts acknowledging DaniWeb's unfair hit, and a couple of high profile forum threads in Google Webmaster Central, DaniWeb made a complete recovery, and even became known industry-wide as the poster child for the Google Panda algorithm update—being known as the only hit website that completely documented their struggle up to the point of complete recovery—only to have lost traffic again in November 2012. Currently, Dani Horowitz is lobbying that the traffic hit was a result of Google unfairly favoring StackOverflow over all other developer-related forums on the web.
