The deepsea herrings are perciform fishes belonging to a small family (Bathyclupeidae) with a single genus (Bathyclupea) containing seven species of deep water fishes.[2]
They are marine fishes found in tropical waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean. They grow up to about 20 cm long.
