Formation 2 September 1946

The Minister of Defence (or the Defence Minister) is the head of the Ministry of Defence of the Government of India. One of the senior-most offices in the Union Cabinet, the Defence Minister has a number of responsibilities related to the defence of the country. Further, while the President of India is nominally the commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces, this authority is exercised by the Defence Minister. He is often assisted by a Minister of State for Defence and less-commonly, the lower-ranked Deputy Minister of Defence.

The first Defence Minister of independent India was Baldev Singh, who served in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet during 1947–52. Since May 2014, Arun Jaitley of the Bharatiya Janata Party is serving as the present Defence Minister. Eight-year continuous reign of A.K. Antony is the longest in the history of independent India.
