DeObia Oparei (also credited as Dhobi Oparei and Deobia Operei) is a London born actor and playwright perhaps best known for his role as the Gunner in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and as Thundarian in Your Highness.
Oparei's acting career in the early 1990s included minor television roles. He spent the mid-1990s performing as a dancer, street performer, stripper, actor, writer and drag queen in Sydney. In platform heels, he stands 7 feet tall. He returned to the UK towards the end of the '90s, and was cast in his first major film role as Le Chocolat in Moulin Rouge! in 2001.
He wrote a play, Crazyblackmuthafuckin'self, which was performed in 2002 at London's prestigious Royal Court Theatre; Oparei also acted in the play. The Guardian's Michael Billington described the play as "wild, raunchy and funny".
