The sixth season of Desperate Housewives, a television series created by Marc Cherry, began airing on September 27, 2009 and concluded on May 16, 2010.[2]The season consisted of 23 episodes. The deceased Mary Alice Young continues to narrate the events in the lives of her friends and Wisteria Lane residents, Susan Delfino, Lynette Scavo, Bree Hodge and Gabrielle Solis. Angie Bolen and her family are the focus of this season's mystery.
The sixth season of Desperate Housewives began in the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 9.55pm. The sixth season began at 10.00pm on January 27, 2010 on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom and began on the Seven Network in Australia on February 1, 2010.[3][4] It started airing at 9:00 PM on February 1, 2010 on OSN's Show Series in the Middle East.[5] It also started airing in India on Star World from February 26, 2010 at 10 pm.[6]
The series saw lower ratings in the sixth season. In the first 12 episodes, the series attracted very similar viewership to the second half of the fifth season. But after the thirtheenth episode of season six, "How About a Friendly Shrink?", the ratings declined heavily because of the competition with the 67th Golden Globe Awards. The series continued to lower numbers, with further competitions like the 2010 Grammy Awards, 2010 Winter Olympics, and the new CBS reality series Undercover Boss, which first aired after the Super Bowl XLIV, pulling impressive ratings. Desperate Housewives lost a lot of steam in the second half of its season, picking up some again in the final three episodes.
Nonetheless, the show managed to get a spot in the twenty most watched series in the 2009-2010 television season, at number twenty, averaging 12.82 million viewers (tenth, in scripted shows).[7] When adding DVR figures, the show ranked at thirteenth place (seventh, amongst scripted shows) with 14.13 million viewers.[8][9] The sixth season ranked fourteenth in the important, advertiser-coveted 18-49 age group, with a 4.2 rating, sixth highest with scripted shows. After including DVR playback (Live+7 days), the season average number increased to a 5.0 rating, placing eighth, in terms of scripted shows.[10][11]

[edit] Production
The first episode of the sixth season, "Nice is Different Than Good", began airing on September 27, 2009. The series creator, Marc Cherry, told Entertainment Weekly that the bride's initial identity was to be Katherine and that Susan was the one who was going to have a nervous breakdown, until viewers informed him that they would rather see Susan and Mike reconcile. Cherry explained: "I originally was going to have Mike marry Katherine, but as I went out into the world on vacation and just started talking to people they were so determined that Mike and Susan should get together; they were so insistent on it. So I started to think, 'What if I went that way?' And it occurred to me that it might be a more effective way to go as opposed to frustrating the fans for another year by keeping Mike and Susan apart. The fans demanded it in a voice so loud I was kind of scared to go against them". Cherry also hinted that the couple's marriage "plays better for this season's mystery". Cherry also said that Katherine will suffer a breakdown, adding: "And it's going to be one of the funniest breakdowns you've ever seen". Marc Cherry revealed that the sixth season mystery will pay homage to a classic Dallas storyline. He added: "What we've planned is an interesting mystery storyline involving one of our beloved characters. It's a 'Who shot J.R.?' kind of storyline .For the mid-season cliffhanger, Marc Cherry has revealed that there will be a plane crash in season six of Desperate Housewives. The show's creator explained that the story is still in the planning stages and added that he does not yet know who will be involved in the accident. "It's going to be my cliffhanger for the first half of the season," he said, adding that it would "affect everyone's lives". However, Cherry said that none of the main characters will be killed in the crash. "I'd love to kill somebody 'cause that's just what I do," he joked. "But the truth is, right now I don't have anyone major dying. However, Cherry eventually decided to kill several characters, including a fan favorite.

[edit] Storylines
[edit] Susan Delfino
Susan and Mike re-marry, following the events of Season 5. However, her happiness is short-lived, as she now has to deal with Katherine's anger and jealousy towards her. Meanwhile, her daughter, Julie Mayer, becomes the victim of a violent attack, which hospitalizes her. Susan is now looking for answers. Who committed this horrible act, and what has been going on in her daughter's life that she felt she needed to hide from her? Susan discovers Bree and Karl's affair, and, after some arguing, gives the relationship her blessing.
When Karl Mayer dies in the plane crash in "Boom Crunch", it is revealed that he had a share in a strip club when his will is read and that he has left his share to Susan. Susan is not pleased and becomes upset when she finds out that Mike is a regular visitor to the strip club. Susan decides to sell her portion, which she does, but convinces Robin Gallagher, a stripper, to reconsider her life and encourages her to quit her job, which she then does.
Susan is currently facing another crisis in her marriage with Mike when he begins to have financial problems and refuses her help. When the problems grows even more, they have no other option but leave their house in Wisteria Lane. Unknown to Susan, the man who rented her house is actually Paul Young, the man who not only killed Martha Huber, but also destroyed Susan and Mike's lives in seasons 1 and 2.
[edit] Lynette Scavo
The Scavo family is tested by Lynette's unexpected pregnancy with twins. Lynette herself is at first unsure if she wants to have the babies. She decides to hide her pregnancy from everyone as she is up for a big promotion at work however it soon becomes too obvious to disguise and Carlos fires her. Meanwhile, she must also deal with Tom going back to college. However, because Lynette got fired, Tom has to quit school. In one of the final scenes of "Boom Crunch", Lynette pushes Celia Solis out of the way of the crashing plane.
After the accident, it is revealed that one of Lynette's babies had died in the womb. The friendship of Lynette and Gaby goes back on a good path because Gaby feels grateful to Lynette for saving Celia's life, and is sorry for Lynette for the loss of her unborn child. Tom goes to work for Carlos until Lynette has the baby. Tom initially tells Carlos that he will be taking over for Lynette permanently, which leads to a bad fight between the two of them. After this time, Lynette and Tom continue to fight a lot, prompting Tom to see a therapist, played by Jane Leeves. Lynette starts to go with Tom to work on their marital issues, but begins to lose faith in the therapist.
When her son, Preston, returns from Europe, he brings with him a Russian woman, named Irina, whom Lynette believes to be a gold-digger, which she later finds to be true in "We All Deserve to Die". Preston call off the wedding, and after Irina leaves, Lynette says that he can hate her how long he wants, but she will be waiting for him with the open arms. Irina is later killed by the Fairview Strangler, who is revealed to be Eddie, one of Porter's best friends. She gives birth to her baby daughter while being held as a hostage by Eddie, and convinces him to turn himself to the police.
[edit] Bree Hodge
Bree's affair with Karl Mayer will see her get mixed up in "wrongdoings" and Orson will have to come to her rescue. Bree is also very concerned about what Susan's reaction will be, if she discovers Bree has been seeing her ex-husband. After firing Katherine, when she causes a scene at a catering event, Bree hires Angie as her replacement and is worried when Angie discovers her affair. In the plane crash, she was inside Santa's house which got destroyed. There was a bloody hand hanging out of the window.
After the crash, Karl is revealed to have died in surgery from his wounds from the crash. Orson had suffered damage to his spine in the accident and may never walk again. Bree then feels remorse for the pain she put Orson through with the divorce and wonders how she could ever make things right with him again. Bree does her best to assist Orson, but Orson is furious with Bree and makes her life a living hell. He refuses to wash and Bree resorts to hosing him off in the yard, at which point he confesses he is upset that he has lost his independence and for the rest of his life must ask for help. Bree apologizes. Orson later considers suicide.
Bree finds herself at odds once again with her son, Andrew, who suspects her new employee, Sam Page (who claims to be Rex's illegitimate son), may be plotting against her.
In "We All Deserve to Die", Sam plots to make Bree fire Andrew, which she later does, but after she reveals to him that since she has a love-and-hate relationship with her son, it's most likely that Andrew would return. After, her dinner is sabotaged and when she tells it to Orson he said that it couldn't be Andrew because it seems something well planned, and Bree begins to suspects of Sam's true intentions.
In "A Little Night Music", Bree begins to see a disturbing side of Sam after she learns that his mother is well alive. He tells her that he blames his mother for not being in a good and rich family. He later blackmails Bree in order to get her company, and he wins, even though she tells him that money won't bring him any happiness.
[edit] Gabrielle Solis
Ana, Gaby's niece who has come to live with her and Carlos, continues to test Gaby's patience by wearing inappropriate clothes, stealing money and sneaking out of the house at night, which causes Gaby to refuse to become Ana's legal guardian. However, when Ana reveals her intentions of rushing through life, Gaby sees herself in her and signs the paperwork making her Ana's legal guardian. Ana thinks Gaby is too mean, and Gaby explains that she wishes someone had been mean to her at that age.
When John Rowland returns, this causes problems with Gabrielle and Carlos. He thinks that she still wants to look nice for her ex-lover. When Gaby shows up at John's restaurant, (where Carlos is having his business dinner) she doesn't put any effort into her look. She tells Carlos that she has stood by him for 11 years. She stayed with him when he was poor, blind and when he "knocked her up twice." When Ana begins to fall for John, Gaby intervenes and tells John to stay away. He then tells her he was only flirting with Ana to see if she still had feelings for him. He then asks her to run off with him and kisses Gaby just as Ana walks in. She confesses her past affair with John to Ana, and the two finally mend fences as Gaby declares her love for Carlos. Gaby then answers John by sending a photo strip of them together, torn right down the middle.
When Gabrielle finds out Lynette is pregnant, she is angered her friend kept this secret rather than risk her job. She does try to make peace but when Lynette sues Carlos, she angrily rejects their friendship. In "Boom Crunch", while Gabrielle and Lynette are fighting during a Christmas block party, a plane crash-lands on Wisteria Lane. Lynette pushes Celia out of the path of the plane.
In "You Gotta Get a Gimmick" Gabrielle told Carlos she didn't want to be reminded of her Mexican heritage - because of how poor she was, not wanting her girls to know she lived like that. Carlos told her they should know where their mother came from and the sacrifice her father made, to which Gabrielle agrees.
Gaby got involved in the Bolen's secret when she overhears Angie and Nick discussing their cover. Later, in "Chromolume No. 7, when Angie and Gaby traveled to New York, Gaby was treated badly by her old co-workers, super-models Heidi Klum and Paulina Porizkova, she realizes that she married Carlos because her career was on the verge of failure. While returning to Fairview, Angie reveals to Gaby that Patrick Logan, the "very bad guy" she's been running away from, is actually Danny's father.
In "We All Deserve to Die", Gaby decides to donate eggs to Bob and Lee so they can have a child but after changes her mind, leading them to break up. Gaby saves the Bolen family and is the one to say goodbye to them when they are leaving for Atlanta (and Danny New York). Bree finally tells Gaby about the hit and run accident that happened 10 years before.
[edit] Katherine Mayfair
Katherine struggles to keep her grip, after Mike leaves her to re-marry Susan. Katherine is very angry with Susan, and seems to be in denial. She tells both Orson and Bree that she believes Mike knows he has made a mistake and will come back to her. Dana Delany has stated that "Katherine is getting to be a little snarky again. She's getting her edge back". Katherine endures a mental breakdown throughout the course of the season. In the episode "Boom Crunch", Katherine stabs herself and blames it on Mike. Katherine had been lying to her daughter, Dylan, about her life with Mike, telling her about the presents Mike had given her and the nice things that he had done. She had a complete breakdown shortly after Dylan confronted her about her lies, which she believed to be true. Katherine spent some time in a mental hospital, where she withdrew from the other Housewives as she could never believe that they could forgive her for the awful things she had done. But in the episode "How About a Friendly Shrink?", Karen, Bree, Lynette, Gaby, and Susan let her know they have forgiven her for her actions, and convince her to return to Wisteria Lane.
Katherine finds a new roommate and friend in Robin Gallagher, the stripper Susan's helping, played by Julie Benz. They become fast friends, and Robin soon reveals to Katherine that she is a lesbian and kisses her. This confuses Katherine, who then starts having sexual dreams about Robin. These confusing thoughts prompt Katherine to ask Robin to move out, but she soon has a change of heart, and the two end up sleeping together. Katherine begins to question her feelings for Robin and calls things off, but Robin tells Katherine that they have a connection which Katherine doesn't argue with. Katherine comes out of the closet when she accidentally reveals in an argument with Robin at a party held for Mrs. McCluskey in front of the neighborhood. Upon Mrs. McCluskey's advice, Katherine and Robin leave Wisteria Lane for a while so that Katherine can avoid the gossip and work on her relationship with Robin. This is the last episode of this season to feature Katherine Mayfair since it's unknown if Dana Delany would return to the show due to the fact that her new show, "Body of Proof", was picked up by ABC. It's speculated that she might return as a guest star in the show's future seasons.
[edit] Angie Bolen
New housewife, Angie Bolen, along with her husband, Nick, and son, Danny, hope to settle down in Wisteria Lane after having moved around a lot in the past. The family has a lot of secrets, and have changed their names several times. The neighbors were hostile towards the family, after Danny became a prime suspect in Julie's attack. Angie uses her manipulative personality to get what she wants and keep secrets hidden, especially toward Katherine whose gunshot wound had the ability to out the true identities of the family. It has been revealed that Nick had an affair with Julie Mayer. But the question is; what are they hiding and what are their true intentions for moving onto the lane? It was revealed that Patrick Logan, not Nick Bolen, is Danny's biological father in the episode "Chromolume No. 7". Patrick discovers that Nick is going out for a walk, and then he ran over Nick with his car. Fearing what he may do next, Angie sends Danny away. Patrick breaks in Angie's house and holds her as a hostage in her own house and forces her to build him a bomb. Desperate, she secretly relies in Gaby for help, and reveals that Danny is being held as a hostage as well. Gaby takes Nick away from the hospital to save Angie. In a very fast and smart way, Angie discovers where the bomb is and switches places, tricking Patrick to be murdered with the bomb she built. She and Nick decide to go to Atlanta, since they're still running away from police, and decide to leave Danny in New York.
[edit] The Fairview Strangler
An unknown person has been dubbed the Fairview Strangler after the strangulation of Julie Mayer in the first episode of season 6 "Nice is Different Than Good" and Emily, a waitress in the eighth episode of season 6 "The Coffee Cup". Luckily Julie survived. She was in a coma for several days before waking up. However, Emily wasn't so lucky. Emily didn't survive her encounter with the strangler and died minutes after she was strangled. In the ninth episode of season 6 "Would I Think of Suicide?", it's shown how everyone is gathered at the scene of the crime at "The Coffee Shop" where Emily was killed, then a mystery guy, whose face is not shown, is seen walking and unwrapping a chewing gum and throwing the chewing gum wrapper on the floor, as this scene plays out, Mary Alice narrates: "Yes, everyone in Fairview now knew a killer was walking among them, and they would soon learn he wasn't finished", confirming that the killer is a male. The killer was revealed to viewers in the nineteenth episode of season 6 "We All Deserve to Die" to be Eddie, a friend of Danny Bolen, who worked at "The Coffee Cup" alongside Emily. Also, in that episode, two more women were murdered by Eddie, a young woman and Preston's fiancee Irina. The twentieth episode of season 6 "Epiphany" entirely revolves around Eddie and how he's been living among the women of Wisteria Lane. It also features him killing his mother and another unknown woman. Lynette finds out the truth too late at the end of the episode "The Ballad of Booth", and Eddie holds her hostage. In the season finale, her water breaks and he must deliver her child. He saves Lynette's daughter after the cord is wrapped around her neck. Eddie at first plans to leave, but then comes back crying and agrees to turn himself into the police, asking Lynette to call the police for him. Lynette allows him to hold her daughter while she calls for him.
The executive producer of Desperate Housewives, Bob Daily, said that this season's two mysteries could be linked. He explained that further clues about the strangler plot and the Bolens' family secret will be revealed throughout the season: "We have two mysteries going on right now, which is a little different for us, we have the Bolen family that has moved in, Drea De Matteo and Jeffrey Nordling, and something they seem to be running from. We also have the mystery of the person who has strangled a couple young women in Fairview. Those two mysteries may or may not be linked to each other. As we're heading into the second half of the season, we're looking to resolving and giving more clues in both of those storylines".[14]
