[edit] History
The Dew Tour was established in 2005 as the world's premier season-long action sports tour. With five stops from June through October, the Dew Tour is owned and operated by Alli, the Alliance of Action Sports. NBC Universal and MTV, along with USA Network, are the broadcast homes of the Dew Tour. They combine for 52 hours of Dew Tour coverage, the largest in all of action sports. In its fourth year, the Dew Tour is the most watched and attended action sports property in the world, reaching 100 countries and 280 million homes worldwide.
Beginning in 2009, the first two stops focus on a single sport(BMX at stop 1 and Skateboard at stop 2). The last three events featured skateboarding (park and vert), BMX (park, vert, and dirt) and freestyle motocross. With cumulative points earned at each of the five stops based on performance, the overall points leader in each of the six disciplines is crowned year-end champion and awarded the prestigious Dew Cup. The winner with the most overall points is also awarded the title of Athlete of the Year. Past Dew Cup winners include Bucky Lasek, Ryan Sheckler, Jamie Bestwick, Shaun White and Nate Adams.
Key lifestyle elements at each Tour event include the Festival Village, specialty competitions, and live cutting-edge music. The Dew Tour's partners include Mountain Dew (tour title sponsor) and Wendy's (whose seat was previously occupied by Vans), Nike 6.0,Toyota and PlayStation (all event title sponsors). Associate partners include Ball Park, Matador, Paul Mitchell, and Verizon Wireless.
[edit] Host sites
The five host sites were selected from more than twenty prospective sites throughout the U.S. through a competitive bidding process. All five sites share a commitment with the Dew Tour to develop and offer fans a first-class, community-based event.
Host sites for the 2009 Dew Tour include Chicago, Ill.; Boston, Mass.; Portland, Ore.; Salt Lake City, Utah and Orlando, Fla.
[edit] Event types
The Dew Tour features three sports, with each sport consisting of several different disciplines:
- BMX
- Dirt: Riders will take runs on an all-dirt course made up of jumps of varying heights and distances. Judges will look for consistency, difficulty of tricks, and overall flow of each run.
- Park: Riders try to put together the best possible run on a park-style course made up of spines, ramps, mini-ramps, wall rides and box jumps. Judges will look for overall flow, use of the course, linking tricks as well as difficulty of tricks when scoring a run.
- Vert: Each rider will have a limited amount of time to put together their best run on this 80' wide half-pipe (BMX and skate share the same ramp). Riders will be judged on flow, height and difficulty of tricks.
- Freestyle Motocross: The only motorized competition on the Dew Tour, FMX features a course composed of metal takeoff ramps and dirt landings. Riders will be judged on their tricks over jumps that allow riders to reach distances of up to 90'.
- Skateboard
- Park: The park-style course will allow skaters to showcase their technical skills as well as their ability to "go big". The combination of ledges and rails with larger park obstacles will bring out a myriad of different lines and tricks, which is what judges will look for.
- Vert: Each rider will have a limited amount of time to put together their best run on this 80' wide half-pipe (BMX and skate share the same ramp). Riders will be judged on flow, height and difficulty of tricks.
[edit] Festival Village
Festival Village is a free, highly interactive complex that fans can explore, giving them a chance to experience the lifestyle aspects of the Dew Tour. Samples, giveaways, contests, and games are offered by sponsors to give the fans a more thorough experience between competitions. Fans get a chance to interact with their favorite athletes at autograph signings and as the athletes themselves discover all there is to see and do in Festival Village.
In 2009, one of the main attractions was the Nike 6.0 Yurt, where fans could design their own shoe and recieve many of the orange Nike 6.0 giveaways. Samples from Wendy's offered a reprieve from the heat with their lounge and Frosty's, while Ballpark and Matador kept the crowds fed with their respective hot dogs and meatsticks. If fans wanted to be a part of the action, they could visit Toyota to attempt their driving course, ride the mechanical bull at Matador, or pick up a Dart Blaster at NERF's Dart Tag course. For those looking to relax between competitions, PlayStation's huge bus shaded an area for people to play their video games, or they could visit the Paul Mitchell "salon" for a hair cut or style advise.
With even more going at the activations of Dickies, JC Penny, FuelTV, Ogio, Woodward, Yamaha, and Lucus Oil, Festival Village is the only place you can properly prepare for and take a break from the Dew Tour.
[edit] Concerts
Another main feature of the Dew Tour is the headlining concerts they put on at every stop. Big names come out to give the fans a musical party- typically either for free or for a minimal ticket cost. The lineup in 2009 was incredible, with hometown rapper Lupe Fiasco in Chicago, Taking Back Sunday at the Skate Open in Boston, rockstar celebs LMFAO in Portland, and rising star Asher Roth in Salt Lake City. The season was closed out with an outdoor show by local phenom Flo Rida in conjunction with the Dew Cup Awards Ceremony in Orlando.
