Diamond drilling is a process used in the industrial and construction sectors which is widely regarded as the gold standard method for drilling holes. This process is a significant improvement as it offers a number of distinct advantages over conventional drilling.

Diamond Drilling or Diamond Core Drilling is the process of cutting through solid rock using a diamond impregnated drill bit attached to the end of a hollow drill rod. The use of diamond drill bits makes cutting more accurate. This mean that the work is carried out to a higher standard. Diamond drill bits come in a plethora of different sizes with a variety of diamond sizes, ranging from fine to micro-fine industrial grade diamonds.

Benefits of diamond drilling[edit]

Diamond drilling is suitable for just about any working environment. The process produces very little noise and no dust, so it’s possible to conduct diamond drilling without disturbing other workers. Furthermore, diamond drilling can be conducted in difficult working environments. The equipment is lightweight and portable, and it is suitable for use in difficult situations, such as confined spaces and even underwater. The technology can even be operated by remote control.

Different types of rock require different bits, with the ratio of diamonds to metal being a main factor of the drill bits ability to cut through certain materials. The matrix in which the diamonds are set also contributes to the efficiency of the drill bit. The matrix can be made of anything from brass to industrial grade steel.

Hard steel bits with a low diamond ratio would be better for soft highly fractured rock. While using bits made of a softer steel with a higher diamond ratio would be best for coring hard rock surfaces.

The drill bits are designed with holes in order to allow water to be pumped to the cutting face, this offer a number of benefits in that it lubricates, cleans and cools the drill bit as well as the hole.[1]

Drawbacks of diamond drilling[edit]

Perhaps the only downside to diamond drilling is the limited size of the drill bits which limit the size of hole that can be drilled. Diamond drill bits tend not to be not much larger than 1,500mm. To overcome this problem, there is a process called stitch drilling which involves producing large or unconventional shapes are created by drilling a number of overlapping holes.
