Titles in academia have been used with varying degrees of consistency in different places and at different times. Some commonly used titles for persons engaged in educating others include:
Administrative titles[edit]
- University President
- Provost
- Chancellor (in the United States)
- Vice-Chancellor (in many Commonwealth countries)
- University Principal (Scotland and Canada)
- Dean
- Vice-Dean or Assistant Dean
- Dean Emeritus
- Rector
- Head teacher (in international schools)
- Director, used to reflect various positions ranging from the head of an institution to the head of a program
- Headmaster
- Principal, as used in primary education
Teaching positions[edit]
- Professor
- Assistant Professor
- Associate Professor
- Professor Emeritus
- Adjunct Professor (or simply "Adjunct")
- Lecturer
- Instructor
- Research Fellow
- Teacher or schoolteacher, generally used in elementary school and high school, as distinct from higher education
