Duhok (also spelled Dohok, Dehok or Dahok, Kurdish: دهۆک, Duhok, Syriac: ܢܘܗܕܪܐ Nuhadra, Arabic: دهوك) is the capital of Duhok Governorate in Iraq, with a population reaching to 900,000 inhabitants, mostly consisting of Kurds, with a significant Assyrian population. The city is encircled by mountains along the Tigris river. Duhok has a growing tourist industry, its population having grown rapidly since the 1990s as the rural population moved to the cities. The University of Dohuk, founded in 1992, is a renowned center for teaching and research in Dohuk.
Sporting teams include: Duhok Football Club (Duhok FC) (Kurdish: یانهیا وهرزشی یا دهوکێ) a Kurdish professional football club, based in Dohuk, that plays in the Iraqi Premier League and Kurdish Premier League. Zeravani Football Club who plays in the Kurdish Premier League. Duhok also has a range of other sport clubs including basketball, Duhok SC (Basketball). The club competes in the Iraqi Division I Basketball League and successfully came third in FIBA Asia Champions Cup in 2012.
Duhok SC football club won the Iraqi premier league championship In the 2009/2010 season beating Talaba SC 1–0 to become the champions for the first time.
