[edit] History
In 1925, a club called "Atlético Escolar Pindú" was founded by José Domínguez Soto in Santo Domingo.
Cóndor, a club from La Vega Province, won the football competition at first National Olympic Games (in 1937). This tournament was disputed in Santo Domingo by five teams (Pindú, Cóndor, Cibao, Vega Real, and San Francisco de Macorís). Cóndor reportedly was national champion for the next 15 years. During this phase, Spaniards priests, members of religious orders also took part in the game. The Augustinians, Jesuits and Salesians all played, and made their mark on the Dominican soccer league, adding to support needed by the sport. Also, in 1941, a club called Sosua–Puerto Plata was founded by Arthur Kirchheimer, a German Jewish from Hamburg, who had fled Germany from the Nazis.
The Dominican football federation was founded in 1953 and joined FIFA in 1959, but it was not until 1965 that football reached the schools and playing grounds of the Dominican Republic, thanks in the main to the efforts of Bolivian Fortunato Quispe Mendoza. From an infrastructure standpoint, it was also Mendoza who established the various playing categories and set up the country's first division championship in 1970.
In 1978, the Dominican federation contracted Argentinian Jorge Rolando Bauger, who had played soccer in the French professional leagues, and had become a licensed soccer coach. Since then, he proved to be one the key components in the continued development of the sport. When his contract with the Federation ended in 1985, he founded his own soccer school. Bauger is also recognized for his involvement in the television broadcasts of the World Cup games since 1986, where his explanations to a less knowledgeable audience broadened the scope of people who watch football.
With the work of the Federation, and the efforts of dedicated people like Quispe and Bauger, soccer in the Dominican Republic began to build a solid foundation.
In spite of these efforts, today football remains the country's fifth most popular sport. As well as being a relatively new discipline for the Dominicans, efforts to nurture the sport have not been helped by the lack of success of the national team, who have still to qualify for any tournament of significance at either senior or youth level, and a national league that struggles to attract a viewing audience or fan base.
