Edward N. Peters, J.D., J.C.D., Ref. Sig. Ap., is an American canonist and Referendary of the Apostolic Signatura (an advisor/consultant to the Holy See's top court) He is professor of canon law at the Sacred Heart Major Seminary of the Archdiocese of Detroit. He translated the 1917 Code of Canon Law from Latin to English.
Early Life and Education
Edward Neal Peters was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, where he attended Chaminade College Preparatory until 1975, where having received a musicianship award, he went on to attend St Louis University, majoring in Political Science, graduating in 1979.
Peters took his JD in Law from University of Missouri Columbia School of Law in 1982, during the third year of which he was a teaching assistant in the Legal Research and Writing Program for Tate Hall. After graduation, Peters was admitted to the Missouri Bar Association.
In 1988, Peters earned his JCL degree and was named Quasten Fellow for doctoral studies, completing doctoral course work in 1990, defending his doctoral dissertation, “Penal Procedural Law in the 1983 Code of Canon Law”, in August of the following year. Over the next twelve years, Peters served as Director of the Office for Canonical Affairs, Vice-Chancellor and Chancellor, Defender of the Bond, and Collegial Judge for diocesan and appellate tribunals for the dioceses of Duluth, Minnesota (Province of St Paul) and of San Diego, California (Province of Los Angeles) and Special Assistant to the Bishop.
From 2001 to 2005, Peters taught at the Institute for Pastoral Theology in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 2005, he was appointed to the Cdl.Szoka Chair at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, and in 2010, was named a Referendary of the Apostolic Signatura by Pope Benedict XVI.
