DynECT Email Delivery

Dyn (aka Dyn Inc) is an IaaS company that provides Internet DNS and email delivery services for commercial and private users. It originally provided a free dynamic DNS service, which allowed users to have a subdomain that points to a computer with regularly changing IP addresses, such as those served by many consumer-level Internet service providers. An update client installed on the user's computer, or built into a networked device such as a router or webcam, keeps the hostname up to date with its current IP address. The company also provides a free content filtering service called Internet Guide.

Dyn offers paid domain registrations, recursive DNS, email forwarding and redirection, network monitoring and URL redirection. Its corporate headquarters are in Manchester, New Hampshire[1] and moved to its fourth location in the summer of 2011.[2]

[edit] History

Dyn (formerly Dynamic Network Services Inc.) was started in 1998 as a free service. As of 2011 it had over four million users. The company also offers premium DNS and email delivery services for consumers via their DynECT Platform.

The company became a Massachusetts limited liability company on October 24, 2001.[3] In July, 2003, the company reorganized into a Delaware corporation.[4]

In 2006 the company moved to larger premises in Manchester, New Hampshire, and in summer 2011 to 150 Dow St.

The company launched the DynECT Platform in October 2007. As of 2011 it had nearly 1000 enterprise customers using the globally dispersed IP Anycast DNS network and SaaS-based failover, load balancing, geo traffic management and CDN Management services.

In June 2011 the company announced plans to open offices in London, UK[5] and San Francisco, CA.

In November 2011 Dyn reduced the number of free hostnames provided from five to one (but only after signing up for a free trial), except for existing users with active hostnames.[6]

[edit] Acquisitions

Dyn acquired three companies during 2010: EveryDNS,[7] EditDNS,[8] and SendLabs.[9]

[edit] Customers

Dyn provides DNS and email delivery services to over 4m active users worldwide with over 13m served since the company's inception in 1998. Customers include Amazon.com, Twitter, Netflix, Pandora, Zappos, and Photobucket.

[edit] Third-party usage

The DynDNS update API[10] was released in 1998 as an open system, to allow control by third-party developers. It has been used by Netgear,[11] OpenDNS, Norton DNS,[12] and No-IP.[13]

A number of router manufacturers have adopted the API to include update capabilities in their devices, including Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, Cisco, Sonicwall, Belkin, and Acorp.

In May 2004 the company started providing DNS services for top-level domains, starting with the .cx TLD. The company also provides DNS for several other TLDs: Christmas Islands (.cx), Mauritius (.mu), Solomon Islands (.sb), as well as of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (.tl).
