East-West University is a private, non-profit, non-denominational college in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood. The University was founded in 1980. East-West offers two and four year degrees and certificates. The university has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1983.
The university primarily serves Chicago's African American population; approximately 10% of Black students who enroll at East-West University each year will graduate within six years.[1] However, the National Center for Education Statistics reports a 20% graduation rate for African-American students and a 27% graduation rate overall for the 2002-08 six year cohort. Therefore, East-West has the highest graduation rate of the three majority-minority four year colleges in the Chicago area. [2]

[edit] Buildings
The university is housed in two buildings connected by a bridge on the third floor. The East Building at 816 S. Michigan was the original home of the university when it opened on September 5, 1980. In 1999, the university acquired The Loftrium Building, also known as the West Building, at 819 S. Wabash Avenue. In October 2011, the university announced its intention to construct a Student Life Center at 825 S. Wabash, which will connect to the Loftrium. The 17-story building will be designed by the firm of Holabird & Root, and will include an auditorium, gym and dormitory space for 220 students. Constructed was expected to begin in December 2011, with the building being completed in time for use in 2013.[3] East-West had purchased the lot from the Johnson Publishing Company in 2008 and tore down the two vacant buildings which were on it.

East-West recorded an enrollment of 1170 students in fall 2008. More than 60% of East-West students are African-American and approximately 15% are Latino, making East-West the only majority-minority private four-year college in Illinois. The university also has a high percentage of foreign students.

[edit] Lecture series
The East-West Perspectives lecture series has attracted prominent speakers such as architect Jeanne Gang, journalist Salim Muwakkil, investment manager Louis Holland, author and labor lawyer Thomas Geoghegan, former Chicago Tribune columnist Mike Conklin, and Beyond the Beltway host Bruce DuMont. The lectures are free, and held on the third Tuesday of the month in October, November, January, February and March; and the third Wednesday of the month in April and May.
