[edit] Achievements

El Rancho was awarded the California Distinguished School Award in 2005.[1]

Also, El Rancho's Science Olympiad team has excelled in competition, achieving the distinction of having gone to the national tournament for nine years in a row, from 1997 to 2005. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] However, in 2006 El Rancho's Science Olympiad team earned fourth place at the Southern California state competition, so the team did not go to nationals that year.[10] In 2007, El Rancho regained its title of state champions and went on to compete at the National Tournament on May 19 in Wichita, Kansas where they placed 12th.[11] In 2008, El Rancho placed first at the State competition again,[12] and competed at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. on May 31, 2008 for the National Tournament. El Rancho's Science Olympiad Team placed 8th out of 60 other schools in the country. They have been in the top ten 10 out of 12 years.[13] In 2009, they did not go to the National Tournament.[14]

[edit] Musical Theatre

El Rancho's Musical Theatre group has three different plays every school year: a Patriotic show, a Broadway Dinner Theatre, and a Star Search show (talent show). It has been a success all year long.

[edit] Music

El Rancho Charter School offers courses in beginning band, intermediate band, concert band, orchestra, and guitar, all taught by Sandy Streeter. Beginning and advanced drum line is taught by David Bartle. El Rancho is the only middle school to have a drum line in the district. The different courses practice daily and perform at various events throughout the year. Highlights in the musical department are concerts such as the winter concert and performing at Knott's Berry Farm. All students in the instrumental music program receive black uniform shirts that can be worn in place of the standard polo. The school is also home to teen pop stars Rebecca Black and Alana Lee, the former who produced the widely criticised 2011 song Friday.

[edit] Dress Code

Girls are required to wear American Casual shorts as part of the uniform. These shorts have an ER (standing for El Rancho) on the bottom left leg so that the shorts can't be tailored or hemmed in any way. This new uniform code was brought on due to the previous year's students' shorts being inappropriate (too short). Uniform shirts colors come in Grey, Green, and Burgundy. Only El Rancho shirts and shorts are allowed. School colors are green and white as are the colors of the P.E. uniform.

[edit] Sports

El Rancho has an after school sports program, available to any student who wishes to participate. The sports alternate from year to year, but usually include track and field, basketball, soccer, and flag football. The teams are coached by the P.E. teachers, and periodically compete against other schools in the district.

[edit] Notable Alumni

Rebecca Black, An American Pop Singer (In early August 2011, Rebecca Black was pulled out of high school for being bullied and teased for her "Friday" internet sensation).
