Elgin is a town in Kershaw County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 806 at the 2000 census. The population was nearly 94% rural in 2010. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Elgin is located at 34°10′11″N 80°47′30″W / 34.16972°N 80.79167°W / 34.16972; -80.79167 (34.169773, -80.791782)[1]. Its Main Street is U.S. 1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), all of it land.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 806 people, 288 households, and 232 families residing in the town. The population density was 833.7 people per square mile (320.8/km²). There were 306 housing units at an average density of 316.5 per square mile (121.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 89.83% White, 8.31% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 1.24% from other races, and 0.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.85% of the population.

There were 288 households out of which 41.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.1% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.4% were non-families. 17.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $49,063, and the median income for a family was $51,667. Males had a median income of $37,417 versus $25,288 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,592. About 9.4% of families and 11.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.3% of those under age 18 and 10.3% of those age 65 or over.

Originally named Jeffers and then Blaney, the town renamed itself Elgin after the Elgin National Watch Company relocated its manufacturing facility to the town from Elgin, Illinois in 1963.[3]
