Emmanuel College (EC) is a coed, residential, Roman Catholic liberal arts college located in Boston, Massachusetts. It is one of the Colleges of the Fenway and was founded as a women's college in 1919 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

The college was founded in 1919 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.[3] The trustees of the college were incorporated by the state in 1921.[4] In 2000, Emmanuel signed an agreement with Merck Pharmaceuticals to lease a portion of it campus for a new research laboratory, making Emmanuel the only college in the country with a pharmaceutical lab on campus[5]. The land was leased for 75 years for approximately $50 million, and Marck extends a yearly invitation for its summer internship program to an Emmanuel student.[6] Emmanuel was a women's college until 2001. Since 2001, overall enrollment has tripled, but male enrollment has declined since the initial surge.[7]

The 17-acre campus is situated adjacent to the Longwood Medical District in The Fenway of Boston. The campus consists of 11 buildings, including four dormitories (Julie Hall, Loretto Hall, St. Joseph Hall, and St. Ann Hall), Cardinal Cushing Library, the Administration Building, Alumnae Hall, Jean Yawkey Center, Marian Hall, Maureen Murphy Wilkens Science Center, and Merck Research Laboratories Boston.[8]

The college is Roman Catholic, founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.[1] It is also a member of the Colleges of the Fenway consortium.[9]

Emmanuel offers over 20 undergraduate majors, which students declare at the end of their sophomore (second) year.[10]

Academic clubs include a Pre-Med Club (36 Hours), an Art Club, a Sociology Club and a Model U.N., among others. Clubs also exist for intramural sports, including baseball, cheerleading, dance team, karate, field hockey and skiing/snowboarding. Community service clubs include the Peace and Justice Club and the Social Awareness Club. Cultural organizations include the Asian Student Association, HUELLAS, Black Student Union, and ACCENT. Other clubs include a Theatre Guild, student newspaper (Le Renard), the student literary magazine (Bang!), and Emmanuel College Radio[2] Among yearly events is a "Moonlight Breakfast" held every semester during exam week.[11]

The college sponsors intercollegiate basketball, soccer, volleyball, cross-country running, outdoor and indoor track, softball, tennis.[12] They compete in the NCAA Division III.[13] Club sports include men's baseball, women's dance, women's field hockey, and men's rugby.

Notable alumni include Mary Beth Cahill[14], a political figure and Nancy Kerrigan[15], a figure skater, as well as Helen Vendler[16], a literary critic. Dick Berggren, a motorsports announcer and editor, is a notable former faculty member.[17] Linda McCarriston, is a poet and Professor in the Department of Creative Writing and Literature at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska, teaching Creative Writing and Literary Arts since 1994.
