Emmanuel College, University of Queensland is a residential college of the University of Queensland in St Lucia, Queensland, Australia. It was the first residential college established at the University of Queensland and the ninth college nationally. Emmanuel College is the third largest of the UQ colleges with a capacity of 340 students (Gatton Halls of Residence, University of Queensland is 100 places bigger with a capacity of 440 and Union College is only just larger with a capacity of 341). Students living at Emmanuel College study for a wide range of degrees and are encouraged to excel academically through the college's extensive tutorial program. As well as academia, students at Emmanuel participate in a wide range of men's and women's sports and compete against the other UQ Colleges for the annual Inter-College Cup (ICC). There is also a wide range of cultural competitions such as Bandfest and College Idol in which Emmanuel competes against the other 9 UQ Colleges for the ICC Cultural Cup.

[edit] History
Australia's ninth, and one of the University of Queensland's first residential colleges, Emmanuel College was founded by the Presbyterian Church of Queensland in September 1911. It was originally located in Wickham Terrace in the city and the first residential intake began there in 1912.
Upon its inauguration, Emmanuel College was an all male residence but changed to co-ed in 1975 when women were admitted as Collegians. Now, the College numbers around 340 students with half the population being female.
The College moved from its original site to its present location on the main University campus in St Lucia in 1955. As the Presbyterian Church moved towards partnership with other religious denominations during the 1970s, Emmanuel College also came under the auspices of the Uniting Church.[1]
[edit] Residences
Emmanuel College currently has eleven "wings" named after people who were influential in the development of the college. The wings include Busch, Drewe, Douglas, Edmonds, Gibson, Glaister, Henderson, Martin, Meiklejohn, Merrington, and McGregor. With the exception of Busch, which is all female, the wings are mixed. Drewe, Edmonds, and McGregor are generally reserved for senior students.
The wings are run by students (generally 2nd-years) known as Wing Leaders, who are appointed by the Principal, Vice Principal and Wing-Leader Co-ordinator at the end of the previous academic year. With a male and a female WL appointed to each wing, they are responsible for maintaining college spirit and community feeling within their wings, organising 'Wing Merch', outings and encouraging their residents to become involved in the rich variety of sporting, cultural and social events organised by the Emmanuel Student Club. They are also responsible for monitoring the well-being of their residents and are people who can be turned to for confidential advice and counselling. The Wing Leader differentiates from the Residential Advisor system (RA) common in other colleges as the Wing Leader does not have any official disciplinary powers and does not fulfil a 'hall monitor' capacity.
