Encarnación is the capital city of the Paraguayan department of Itapúa, located at the south of the department, on the right-hand shore of the Paraná River, opposite Posadas, Argentina. The city has an area of 588 km² and a population of 93.497 (2002 Census).

It is situated (370 km) 235 miles south-east of the capital Asunción on the Paraná River, opposite to the Argentine city of Posadas. The two cities are linked by the San Roque González de Santa Cruz Bridge.

Encarnación is the capital of the department of Itapúa and has a total population of 93,497 and a urban population of 67,173 according to the 2002 National Census.[1]
Most of the inhabitants are of mixed Spanish and Amerindian descent as in the rest of Paraguay but there are also minorities of Germans, Ukrainians, Japanese, Koreans, Arabs, New Zealanders, Chinese and Poles[citation needed].

The city was founded by the paraguayan jesuit San Roque González de Santa Cruz on March 25, 1615[citation needed]. It gained in importance after the coming of the railway in 1854[citation needed].
In 1957, the city was made the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Encarnación[citation needed].
Today the city is divided into two main sections - the old city by the river and the newer business district inland[citation needed]. Because of its mild climate Encarnación is often called "The Pearl of the South"[citation needed].
Encarnación was the birthplace of Alfredo Stroessner, general and head of state of Paraguay from 1954 to 1989.

It is also the Carnival Capital of Paraguay, a yearly celebration of mostly Brazilian music and dance in February.[citation needed] The city have luxury places such as restaurants, hotels of 5 stars, casino, parks, cinema, theaters, costaneras, etc.[citation needed] The principal activity of the population is trade, whith business of all kind.[citation needed]
The city is located near the Jesuit Missions, such as La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Misión jesuítica de Jesús de Tavarangué, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.[citation needed]

Encarnación has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa). The annual mean temperature is 20 °C (68 °F). The annual mean relative humidity is 77%.
