Engineer is an annual technical symposium in India organized by NITK Surathkal. The event was started after the amalgamation of many technical festivals held at NITK Surathkal by student clubs. Held for the first time in 2005, it has consistently attracted participants from all over the India.
Engineer provides the perfect platform for students across the globe to showcase their technical talents and their passion in the field of science and technology through events of international standards. It attracts enormous participation from students, subject experts, corporates and eminent personalities from all over the world.Each year, the festival surpasses its predecessor in terms of quality of events, industrial and entrepreneurial involvement and participation. In its previous edition, Engineer brought organizations such as CERN, MIT Media and Bell labs while catering to a participation pool of over 6000 students from 150 colleges across 65 countries.[1]
Guest speakers have included Richard Stallman, Sam Pitroda, Dr. Devi Shetty, Sir Anthony James Leggett, Ankit Fadia and other personalities.[2]

NITK will be organizing our Annual Technical Symposium Engineer between the 26th and the 30th of October this year.Engineer 2011 aims to bring the engineering community together, help innovate ideas and to bring about a positive change in thinking amongst the people who will be a part of it. [3]

Blueprint
Blueprint is a paper presentation event. Blueprint attracts some of the best minds from all over the country and gives them a platform to put their ideas forth in front of an experienced panel of judges.
Socially Conscious Engineering
‘Sparsh,’ the initiative by Social Conscious Engineering (SCE), which is an important facet of ‘Engineer,’ the annual technical symposium of NITK, the students have literally touched the lives of many at Munda, a small hamlet about 9 km away from the Institute. SCE aims to remind the students that inventions and innovations are void if they have no social benefit, to the common man. The Sparsh project starts during Engineer, as an idea generation event, continues with the implementation of the best ideas of the winning team. [4]
E-Pitch
E-Pitch is the flagship entrepreneurship event which provides a platform for students to put forth their business ideas.[5] [6]
Technites
Technites will present an impressive list of events: a truly colossal game of Tetris, played out on a 7 storey building; Skeet Shooter and Laser Tanks, and so much more. What makes Technites more impressive is the fact that the events presented there are developed by the students of NITK, Surathkal.[7]

Mining Events
The mining events this year boasts of Mining Tycoon, a unique event which blurs the line between mining and management making the participants enumerate all possible alternatives for a given situation and come up with plausible solutions. Also on the list are Sustantivo, an event to illustrate how important surveying is to a project and Poster Presentation, a twist on the paper presentation where you let the poster do the talking.
Computer Events
Inscription, which is the Computer events’ flagship online coding event, boasts of participation from over 47 countries and teams from Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. Marathon, a scripting and basic programming event spanning the entire festival, android apps development, code error hunting and developing bots to play a variant of pacman.[8]
Civil Events
There are many events like Nirvahana, Architect, Collosus which are basically related to Civil Engineering. Students will be asked to construct working structures using whatever they have learnt. Events are Quick CAD, Architect, Colossus, Nirvahana, Fantasticity, Mindbend, Blueprint etc [9]
Mechanical Events
The Mechanical events will see exciting events such as Velocity, the remote controlled I.C engine powered car competition which has always been a crowd puller. Perfect machine will let you build an all terrain vehicle modeled on planet roving robots. The ever favorite Robowars will also be held.
Material Science
The material science committee has a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) expo, showcasing a working demonstration of the high-tech equipment. MetaMagic, an open exhibition to show the wonders of the materials around us, is also up for display. If you feel that you have an idea, breakthrough or solution to problems that we face, then Canvas- the Poster presentation event- is for you. The Metallurgy quiz boasts a refreshing new format combining materials trivia with ingenuity, strategy and quick thinking. Lastly, Metamorphosis, the flagship event is bigger than before and will push the participants to the limit with their industrial problem statement from Buhler group.
Chemical Events
ChemUdyog will let you design a town where industries and the biosystem exist in harmony. The Industry defined problem statement will ask for participants to come up with a solution for a problem given by Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF).

For the entrepreneurs around, TechVenture is being organized to solve a real problem using your technical and entrepreneurial skills. Events are E-Pitch, Mock stock, TechVenture, Ad-Venture [10]

The Electrical and Electronics committee have a wide range of events in store this Engineer which include Automata, the autonomous robot competition and Trade Off, which will challenge your digital and analog problem solving ability, Simplicity, if coding on MATLAB is your forte, Symphony, the event where you design your own musical fountain-an all time favourite among electronics engineers, Trailblazer, a simple line follower robot event and lastly Foxhunt, the HAM radio competition which is the most exhilarating in this line-up of events. Engineer 2011 has many events for the entrepreneur in you. This includes Finanza, which will test your financial skills in a recession hit market,
Personeel, the HR event where the participant designs a compensation program for a given situation, Mercades, the marketing event which tests the competency of your product over all the others, and lastly MindBend, a quiz that will test all your core concepts. Apart from the branch events mentioned, Blueprint is being held as a paper presentation competition where innovative research papers in all fields of engineering are welcome. The fifth edition of Engineer promised to continue its success story. For the first time, it features Impetus, where robotics events' preliminary rounds were held at a venue outside the institute's campus, in cities of Hyderabad, Bangalore and Pune. Engineer in 2008, in line with the ongoing trend, was conducted on an even grander scale. It had Green Engineering as its theme, where technical progress is considered keeping in mind sustainability and protection of the environment. It featured traditional favourites such as Automata, Perfect Machine and Last Word and a host of new additions which included a dazzling laser show and an UV light dance. The 2007 edition of Engineer was conducted on a larger scale and witnessed international participation with participation from the Gulf along with participants from major colleges across India. The online events drew programmers from universities in Europe, Americas and Asia. The robotics events were appreciated and well contested. The workshop conducted by Indian Underwater Robotics Society (IURS) was unique to Engineer. The four-day event included video conferences with Kevin Warwick, Ehud Shapiro, Nobel Laureate John C. Mather and Bjarne Stroustrup.

The events at Engineer 2006 included paper presentation competitions, project presentations, Shrishti, where participants are required to apply engineering for the greater good of society, robotics events (Perfect Machine, Automata), hacking contests, programming contests, design problems, and workshops and seminars.[11][12]
