Enterprise Smart Grid is the application of smart grid concepts to the demand side. Smart Grid typically refers to the supply side of the energy production and distribution by utilities and homes. Enterprise Smart Grid is the use of submeters, demand response, energy management software, building management systems to drive 5-15% reduction in energy use.

Savings come from behavior changes such as load shifting and turning off equipment. Companies are also motivated by savings from utility rebate programs or avoiding increase costs due to real time pricing, critical peak pricing, or other time-based pricing.

Differences with Smart Grid[edit]

Enterprise Smart Grid differs from the Utility Smart Grid because it focuses on energy reduction from a company’s standpoint and not a utility standpoint. As such, it often involves water and steam, as well as electric and gas. The utility smart grid often is about innovation for generation and distribution up to the main utility meter at the company. Enterprise Smart Grid focuses on technology and processes that match how companies operate. This is load centric (e.g. HVAC, machine shop), all facilities (not just those in one geographic region of a utility.

Adoption[edit]

While the concept of submetering of loads across multiple facilities linked to centralized energy management system has been around for at least a decade, the expected rise energy prices after the recession, technology innovation, corporate goals to reduce energy and GHG emissions indicates a growing adoption. In fact, some companies are investing in enterprise smart grid now. Ahold USA recently announced that its adding real time submetering to its 630 grocery stores in the United States.
