Essa is a township west and south of the city of Barrie in the County of Simcoe. It is bounded by County Road 90 to its north, County Road 27 to its east, Highway 89 to its south. The township is about 100 kilometers from Toronto.

The main communities of this township are Angus, Thornton and Baxter. Other small hamlets are Cedargrove, Colwell, Egbert, Elmgrove, Hoe Doe Valley, Ivy, Utopia and West Essa. Much of CFB Borden is located adjacent to the northwest corner of the township bordering Angus. CFB Borden is one of the major employers in the township alongside Honda, which is mostly otherwise a bedroom community whose residents largely commute to Toronto for work.

The current mayor of Essa is David Guergis. He is the brother of Tony Guergis, the current mayor of the neighbouring township of Springwater, and the cousin of Helena Guergis, the current federal Member of Parliament for Simcoe—Grey, and Christine Brayford, a municipal councillor in New Tecumseth.[2]
