Estrella Archs (born 1974 in Barcelona, Spain) is a Spanish fashion designer. She has lived in Paris, Florence, and Milan and has worked for well known fashion houses (Estrella Archs, 2011).Estrella Archs launched her own line in 2007 and debut it at Paris’s Fashion Week where she has since unveiled all of her collections(Estrella Archs, 2011).
Archs has worked for Hussein Chalayan, Emilio Pucci, Cacharel, Miuccia Prada, and Nina Ricci.[1] She has also worked as a fashion journalist for Spanish Vogue. Archs is a graduate from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.[2]
In 2009, she took over as the head designer of fashion house Emanuel Ungaro, replacing Esteban Cortazar.[3] Archs worked with American film actress Lindsay Lohan, who was just hired as Ungaro's artistic director, on her first collection for the house.[2] In April 2010, it was announced that Archs had left the company.[2][4] Archs' spokesperson said "Estrella Archs announces that she has left her job as chief designer of Emanuel Ungaro due to irreconcilable differences related to the creative direction of the brand.[5]
In the summer of 2010 Estrella Archs created costumes for London’s Royal Ballet in the work called Aimanter (Fashion from Spain, 2010). The Ballet company Chose Estrella as their designer for the costumes of their leading roles, because of her originality and flair (Fashion from Spain, 2010). This was the first appearance for Ms. Archs in the world of dance which is where she gets most of her inspiration from for her collections (Fashion from Spain, 2010). Since Ballet is a means for self-expression through the freedom of movement of the body, this is a dream come true for Ms. Archs (Fashion from Spain, 2010). In an interview by Fashion form Spain Ms. Archs was quoted saying, “this relationship that has now begun with the ballet dancers of London’s Royal Ballet enables me to explore the movements of the female body with the space around it which is and has always been so important in my collections” (Fashion from Spain, 2010).
Estrella’s most recent Spring 2011 Collection was inspired by the body in motion of a Ballerina. For her fashion show she pushed the envelope by using real dancers who were ballerinas instead of models. The ballerinas did not walk the runway but they danced their way down the catwalk. The collection is a mixture of whimsical, femininity, and inspirational art. Her signature style is being true to pure form and accentuating a women’s personality through simplicity and allure (Estrella Archs, 2011).
Most of Archs inspiration for her designs comes from ballet, this makes sense because her designs celebrate the human body and the way it moves in the artistic sense.
