Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar put his name into football history for making key saves and distracting his opponents during the penalty shootout with his leg-wobbling antics.

Hamburg, the defending champions, were eliminated by Dinamo București in the second round.

It was the seventh time in eight years that the trophy had been won by an English side, but it would be another 15 years before another English side won it.

[edit] Semifinals

The tie between Roma and Dundee United was controversial; it was later alleged that Roma had bribed Michel Vautrot, the referee for the second leg.[6] The Liverpool vs Dinamo Bucharest tie was highly physical and confrontational in nature.
