Excel is a town in Monroe County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 582. The current mayor is Jenny Countryman. Excel is the birthplace of former University of Alabama and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Lee Roy Jordan. Excel High School(2A) provides education for children throughout Monroe county. The Town of Excel is made up of the Excel Supermarket(IGA), Dollar General, a "do-it-yourself" car wash, a laundramat, hardware store, and a locally-run diner make up Excel's downtown. There is one bank.

Excel is located at 31°25′38″N 87°20′26″W / 31.42722°N 87.34056°W / 31.42722; -87.34056 (31.427308, -87.340587)[1].

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2), all of it land.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 582 people, 226 households, and 166 families residing in the town. The population density was 352.8 people per square mile (136.2/km2). There were 253 housing units at an average density of 153.4 per square mile (59.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.25% White, 1.72% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 226 households out of which 35.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.3% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $33,214, and the median income for a family was $41,667. Males had a median income of $31,058 versus $22,143 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,158. About 7.7% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.8% of those under age 18 and 15.9% of those age 65 or over.
