The 2005 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup was the first edition of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup under the direct control of the global association football governing body FIFA. Previous editions were not organised by FIFA, and were held under the title Beach Soccer World Championship. In 2005 FIFA took over the governing of beach soccer and the control of the tournament passed onto them. The tournament took place from May 8 to May 15, 2005, in Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

[edit] Organisation

12 teams were present at the finals in Brasil, each split into 4 groups of 3 teams. Each team played the other 2 teams in its group in a round robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the quarter finals. The quarter finals, semi finals and the final itself would be played as in a knockout tournament. In the case of a drawn match in the knockout phase, sudden death penalties will be taken.
